ViMe - journal of visual methods

In response to the rapid transformation of how visual content is generated, mediated, and consumed, ViMe serves as a dedicated platform for innovative and interdisciplinary methodological development. As a peer-reviewed Diamond Open Access journal, it provides an open and inclusive forum that critically engages with existing methodological approaches while also fosters the development of innovative and experimental methods.

ViMe considers papers that develop, evaluate, and critically reflect on methods for researching visuals and visuality across diverse mediated contexts. These contexts include, but are not limited to, traditional media (e.g., television, film, news), social media and other digital platforms, artistic and creative audiovisual practices.

What distinguishes ViMe is its commitment to publishing papers that offer detailed methodological guidance, enabling other researchers to follow, adapt, or replicate the research practices presented. In this spirit, ViMe aims to feature methodological “recipes” that are transparent, well documented and explained.

ViMe is committed to advancing ethical, transparent, and reflexive approaches to visual inquiry in contemporary media environments. We therefore also encourage contributions that critically examine methodological ethics and engage in rigorous epistemological reflection, strengthening both the practical and theoretical foundations of visual research.

In line with this envision, ViMe welcomes a range of contribution formats:

  • Methods tutorials and step-by-step walkthroughs
  • Analytical tools
  • Datasets
  • Systematic methods reviews
  • Research ethics guidelines and methodological principles

ViMe will be officially launched in Q1 2027 with a set of pre-curated inaugural issues. Until then, submissions are by invitation only.
